Teaser 8
What is the difference between an Mark Man and a Mark Master?
The Ceremony of Advancement in a Mark Lodge incorporates two Degrees, for the Candidate is first acknowledged as a Mark Man and then subsequently advances to a Mark Master Mason.
So what is the degree about? Essentially its about the building of the Sacred Arch of King Solomon’s temple. This was the first temple at Jerusalem, which had stood for nearly 400 years before being destroyed by the Babylonians.
The Ceremony of Advancement follows the fate of an ambitious Fellow Craft seeking promotion in his trade by demonstrating his skill and ability. The first part of the Ceremony a Candidate is made a Mark Man,and acknowledged as someone who is starting his Masonry career in the quarries.
Masonic tradition informs us that at the building of the Temple every Mason was given a mark by which his work would be identified by his superiors or overseers.
During this part of the ceremony a candidate needs to prove himself a Master Mason then chooses a mark and so begins his apprenticeship in preparing work for the temple.
By the aid of these marks an overseer or (mark masters) were able to trace any defective work to the workman concerned, as well as pay his wages.
In the second part of the ceremony the candidate is in the quarries of Zeredatha where the stones for the temple are cut and shaped. Having prepared some work it has to be presented at the building site for approval. Three gates and three overseers guard the site. The Mark man needs to present his work at these gates for approval or rejection. If approved, he is made a Mark Master Mason and this would entitle him to preside over a Lodge of operative masons.
Don’t be one of those who miss out on an interesting fun degree. Either speak to a brother who you know and is a member and ask for more details, or contact the Provincial Grand Secretary via the contact details on the website at www.essexmark.co.uk or email to [email protected].
This is the eighth in a set of 9 teasers in this campaign and previous teasers can still be found on the Essex Mark website by clicking on the Teaser of the Month button on the front page.
