St. Nicholas Mark Lodge No 413
Thursday 20 January 2022
Harwich Masonic Centre
The St. Nicholas Mark Lodge held its first meeting of 2022 on Thursday 20 January at the Harwich Masonic Centre, under challenging circumstances. The Worshipful Master, having prepared himself alongside other members of the Lodge at a Lodge of Instruction, a few days before the meeting, tested positive for Covid, which could have impacted almost all of the Lodge Officers.
Fortunately, after a ‘flurry’ of tests, only the Master tested positive and the meeting could go ahead, albeit without him, the Acting Master was to be W. Bro. Brian Todd.
The members of St. Nicholas then enacted their ‘Plan B’ in readiness for the Advancement of Bro. John Hughes of the Essex United Service Lodge No. 3804, which also meets at Harwich. In true Essex Mark style, the Lodge called for some assistance to create a memorable Ceremony for Bro. John and members of ‘Brilliant’ Beriffe No. 825 and Naze Tower No. 1380 answered the call.
The Mark Lodges of the North of the County regularly offer their support to each other and with Harwich being in the distant North East of Essex; have formed a strong bond of support as visitors are not as frequent as they could be.
The meeting was a go for launch and the Ceremony was undertaken in true St. Nicholas fashion with a sincere Ceremony of Advancement to welcome another Mark Master into the Province of Essex. There was thanks to the following Brethren in attending to support St. Nicholas and in taking office for the Ceremony;
W. Bro. Andy Sylvester of Naze Tower as JO.
W. Bro. Dick Stephens of Berrife as SO
Bro. John Adams of Naze Tower as IG
Bro. Les Bond, the newest member of St. Nicholas acted at Tyler.
Freshly Advanced Bro. John Hughes remarked at the Festive Board, “I was told that this is the friendly degree, and everyone has proved that by putting me at ease with a warm and friendly ceremony. Thank you all, very much.”

Mark of Love and Remembrance No 1718
Saturday 20 November
Rochford Masonic Centre
At the positively ungodly hour of 10.00am on Saturday 20 November 2021 the brethren of Mark of Love and Remembrance M.M.M. No. 1718 met for their first regular meeting in a very long time. Rochford Masonic Centre was the venue and although it is undergoing a large renovation, was more than ready to host this meeting. The lodge met just a month or so ago at an emergency meeting to advance two candidates who had been waiting a very long time to join the Mark degree and this time they were able to Install their new W.M. in the Mark degree who had also been waiting a very long time.
At 10.00am precisely the Worshipful Commander opened his Ark for what was a relatively short meeting. W.Bro. Vince Bull approved a considerable number of minutes which had been outstanding since the last regular meeting and was then proclaimed as Worshipful Commander for the year and he then went on to appoint and or re-invest his officers for the year.
The brethren then elected W.Bro. Pierre Waddoups as the Worshipful Commander for the ensuing year and W.Bro. Barry Coombes as Treasurer.
The W.Commander thanked Bro. Martin Parsons for acting as I.G. at the very, very last moment.
There was nothing further for the good of the lodge, so the lodge was closed in due form at 10.30am.
The brethren then retired for tea, coffee and biscuits whilst the Lodge room was prepared for the Mark degree.

He then requested W.Bro. Jeff Bennett to act as S.W., W.Bro. Steve Joslin to act as J.W. and W.Bro. Peter Steele to act as I.G. for the ceremony of Installation. The W.M. then thanked the officers of the year on behalf of the outgoing W.M. W.Bro. Peter Houghton who was unable to attend.
The D.C. then presented Bro. Kevin Bull who was duly obligated. The brethren below the rank of I.M. then retired and a Board of Installed Masters was declared.

W.Bro. Vince Bull then Installed his brother, Bro. Kevin Bull in an excellent and emotional ceremony.
The Board was closed, and the brethren readmitted; the W.M. the appointed and invested his officers for the year with an ever-decreasing voice as he had only very recently recovered from Covid -19.
W.Bro. Vince Bull then gave a fantastic rendition of the Address to the Master.

The Almoner and Charity Steward reports were given and the W.M. then went through the risings, thanking W.Bro. Len Abrahams for stepping in as Tyler at the last moment. With nothing further for the good of Mark masonry and the Mark of Love & Remembrance No. 1718 in particular, the lodge was closed in perfect harmony at 12.15pm.
The brethren assembled for refreshment before dining at their customary buffet festive board where, as is also customary, a cake made by W.Bro Pierre’s partner Mary was presented to the W.M. and sparked a debate on who was the actual W.M - W.Bro. Kevin or his body double on the cake?

Brentwood Lodge of M.M.M. No 377
PLUS 60 Year Service Presentation
Monday 22 November
Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite
On Monday the 22nd of November 2021, the Brethren of the Brentwood Mark and RAM Lodge No. 377 attended the Hutton Masonic Centre for their second Regular meeting since the suspension of Masonic meetings were lifted. They had a lot of work to do and all would be under the supportive eye of V. W. Bro. Mark Steven Reeve, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, on his official visit to the Lodge.
The Royal Ark Mariner Lodge was opened at 4pm for the Installation of W. Bro. Nigel Owen as Commander, the Installation of his officers and to undertake the various necessary Elections. The meeting was well attended with 23 Brethren in support of the Commander and his team who all enjoyed the decorum with which the Installation was undertaken.
An hour later, the Brentwood Mark Lodge was opened in readiness for a busy meeting, but first the APGM, V. W. Bro. Mark S. Reeve was escorted into the Lodge by W. Bro. Geoff Waddoups, the Provincial DC who had formed a procession of Grand and Provincial Grand officers to first meet and then escort the APGM into the Lodge.
The next item on the agenda was a Eulogy for W. Bro. Gordon Wilson who had sadly passed to the Grand Lodge above and this was delivered by his long time friend W. Bro. Alan Hoggett in a manner befitting a man who lived respected and died regretted. The Lodge Elections were completed with W. Bro. Michael Jervis nominated as the Master for his 2nd year, followed by a Ballot for two Candidates to be Advanced which proved in their favour.
The Officers were ready and the Candidates were brought in to the Lodge and introduced to the Master who took them to their Obligation before they were led from the Lodge to make themselves ready for the hard work to come. The Master then invited W. Bro. Roy Kaye to take the Master Chair to conduct the remainder of the Ceremony. Between the excellent floor work of the Deacons and Roy’s firm grip of the ritual, the Candidates were treated to a heart- felt and dramatic Ceremony that shall remain with them for years to come. A great entry into the Mark Degree and the comradery of the Province of Essex in particular.
It was then the turn of V. W. Bro. Mark S. Reeve to stand and say a few words about a Brother that had recently celebrated 60 years in the Mark Degree. We were taken on a tour of 1961 and the years that followed without the Brother acknowledging that it could be him until W. Bro. Alan Hoggett was asked to stand whilst the members of Brentwood Mark and their visitors stood to applaud his milestone. W. Bro. Alan was Advanced in Karachi in 1961 and after many years serving abroad, returned to Essex and joined the West Ham Mark No. 467 and a few years later the Brentwood Mark No. 377, all adding up to the very rare presentation of 60 years in the Degree.
The Secretary then informed the Lodge that they have a further 3 Candidates ready for Advancement with the next one being the Son of their Junior Deacon. The future of the Lodge looks very bright indeed and it was great to see such an historic Lodge continuing its legacy towards its 145th Anniversary next year, in 2022.
The 26 Brethren in attendance then retired to an excellent festive board and an atmosphere that all enjoyed and one that I will be returning to experience in February and the next meeting of the Brentwood Mark and RAM Lodges.

Battlesbridge Lodge of M.M.M. No 1415
Monday 8 November 2021
Saxon Hall
From the received Summons it was noticed how small but equally impressive the membership list was. Battlesbridge Mark has suffered losses over the past 18 months due in part to the Covid Pandemic. Encouraged by an Official visit from W.Bro. Richard Goodwin APGM this friendly Lodge is always worth attending.
The RAM started promptly with nine members, three guests, the APGM with his ADC. So friendly a Lodge the visitors found themselves standing in for the vacant offices.
The agenda was Lodge business to read the Dispensation & Proclaim W.Bro. John Lavery to carry on as W.Commander for another year. W.Bro. John then appointed his Officers with a few changes. Business all concluded we vacated whilst the Tyler arranged the Mark Lodge.
The Battlesbridge Mark opened promptly to start business. The visitors again found themselves in offices to assist the Lodge.
There was a report with W.Bro Geoff Waddoups, Provincial ADC entering to request admission for the APGM. A small procession of Grand Rank brethren filed out to have W.Bro. Richard Goodwin greet them before processing back in. W.Bro.Richard was welcomed but graciously declined the kind offer of the gavel.
The W.Master then started to work through the business Agenda with various reports. A special mention was made of W.Bro. Clive Dunnico on his promotion to Past Grand Senior Deacon.
W.Bro, Jeffery Conway PAGDC, PProv.GSW was proclaimed as W.Master for the ensuing year and proceeded to invest his Officers. All the members present were appointed with a fair few to follow at a future meeting. The rest of the Agenda was dealt with up to the closings.
In the closings W.Bro. Richard Goodwin APGM arose to pass on the PGM’s best wishes. Also to promote the 2030 Essex Mark Festival outlining future activities. WBro. Richard also expressed the importance of the RRR’s of which Recruitment is vital to Regeneration & Retention of existing membership. The Lodge was closed in harmony and thirteen Mark brethren retired to the Festive Board. A sumptuous feast was enjoyed by all. Battlesbridge RAM & Mark enjoyed a very good meeting & look forward to another day. You are always guaranteed a very friendly Battlesbridge Mark welcome…and a job so please consider a visit.

Beriffe Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 825. 12-10-202
The Lodge was opened by the Worshipful Master W.Bro. Brian Birkin and his first duty was to ask Bro. Peter Ball to present a eulogy for his great friend and Brother, James McClure, who had passed to the Grand Lodge above on the 29th of September 2021. Peter did Jim proud with very moving, and informative words.
The Lodge had decided that as the Master and Officers had not been able to carry out their duties due to the pandemic, everyone would remain in place until the next Installation meeting.
The Director of Ceremonies, W.Bro. Bob Crow then proclaimed W.Bro. Brian Birkin as W.M. after which he Appointed and Invested his Officers.
The Treasurer then presented a report with a copy of the accounts to the members which will be put before the lodge for approval at the next meeting.
The numbers of Brethren in attendance for this meeting was down, (19), and the Lodge will monitor this situation and try to ascertain if it is due to members being apprehensive about Covid or other reasons that will need to be addressed.
This was the first meeting of the Lodge since the lockdown but the ritual was carried out well considering the lay-off and those in attendance enjoyed being back to a “sort of normal”.

Friday 24th of September was a beautiful sunny day. W.Bro Richard Goodwin A.P.G.M. and W.Bro. John Finlay D.P.G.M. both representing the Provincial Grand Master, R.W.Bro. Terence D. Sheern. were privileged to attend the Annual Meeting of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Kent, held at Oakley House, Bromley.
The meeting saw the installation of Very Worshipful Brother (now R.W.) Bro Peter Williams as the new PGM for the Mark Province of Kent. The ceremony was carried out faultlessly by the Pro Grand Master and the Grand Lodge team.
The only blight on the day was travelling North via the Dartford Crossing back into Essex on a Friday afternoon, choked as always but that didn't detract from a superb day spent with Friends and Brothers in Kent.
Best wishes to the former Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro Archie Torrance on his retirement.

St.Katherine's RAM and MMM Lodge Meetings
St Katharine’s Lodge of MMM No.1026 met on Saturday at the Fraternity Hall In Eastwood for its first full meeting since the lockdowns began. The small hall in Eastwood was graced with several visitors and the afternoon began with the St Katharine Lodge of Royal Ark Mariner 1026 meeting.
The Worshipful Commander, W. Bro Les Dunn opened his Ark and was then proclaimed as Worshipful Commander for the ensuing year, he then appointed and invested his officers keeping many in the same office but investing Bro. Bob Johnson as Senior Warden, Bro. Andy Fletcher as Junior Warden and Bro. Rob Whitfield as Guardian. Two propositions for joining were read out and the Worshipful Commander closed the lodge in due form. He then left for the day as he was feeling unwell, and we all wish him well.
The Lodge room was then swiftly transformed into a Mark Lodge room and the Mark meeting began on time at 5.00pm. The Lodge was opened by the Worshipful Master W. Bro Bob Johnson and the Brethren then heard a eulogy for W.Bro Brian Wood who passed to the Grand Lodge above in July. The Brethren stood to order in respect and the lodge then moved on to its work for the day.
The Director of Ceremonies then proclaimed W.Bro Bob Johnson as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year under a dispensation from Grand Lodge and he then appointed and invested his officers.
The Worshipful Master vacated the chair in favour of W. Bro Steve Joslin to carry out the double ceremony of Advancement for Bro Dave Bowler and Bro Ray Quiddington, both of whom had been waiting patiently since before lockdown to become Mark Men The Worshipful Master was fortunate to be able to call upon several visiting Brethren to assist during the ceremony with all the Overseer’s chairs being filled by them. W. Bro David Hook as Master Overseer, W. Bro Vince Bull as Senior Overseer and W. Bro Geoff Newman as Junior Overseer. W.Bro Ken Berry acted as Inner Guard. The ceremony went without a hitch and Bro’s Dave and Ray were advanced into Mark Masonry in style. The Master Overseer did however question Bro Ray’s ability as a Plumber.
W.Bro Joslin then returned the chair to its rightful occupant and the meeting continued. The Charity Steward announced that the Lodge would be continuing with its support for the Canvey Sea Scouts Scout of the Year with a plaque and a cash prize. The Lodge then acknowledged W. Bro Bill Spilsted for his 40 plus years in Mark Masonry which he actually celebrated during the enforced closure and has now reached 42 years in the Mark degree.
Bro. Rob Whitfield being the sole nomination was elected as Master for the coming year and accepted the office graciously with a few well-chosen words.
The Lodge was then closed in due and ancient form at 7.15pm and 18 brethren dined in harmony at the festive board.

Potters Clay RAM and MMM Lodge No.1339
Deferred Regular meeting held at Masonic Hall, Potter Street, Harlow, Essex On Wednesday 18th August 2021 starting at 5pm for the RAM.
We arrived nice & early to find the Potters Clay Brethren setting up the RAM Lodge. They were low on numbers so called out the Ritual Support Team(RST) to ensure there were no offices unfilled. Also present were W.Bros. David Garston, Roy Kaye and Len Abrahams. The ‘visitors’ took up various offices to assist in the running of this RAM Lodge.
A number of the Potters Clay brethren were absent for a variety of reasons so support was needed & appreciated. The RAM Lodge worked through the Agenda to read the Dispensation & Proclaim W.Bro. Cliff Perry as W.Commander. All business was dealt with in a most efficient manner to finish early.
The Potters Clay Lodge of MMM No.1399 starting at 6pm.
After such a long hiatus it was really nice to see a Candidate on the Agenda. The Offices had to be filled beforehand with the aid of the RST of W.Bros. David Garston, Roy Kaye & Len Abrahams taking important positions to assist in the ceremony.
There was another special fact to report in that one of the longest subscribing members managed to get transport to Harlow. Third in the membership list was a certain Bro. Albert Dipre, 91 years young who had been unable to attend Potters Clay since the early 1980’s! Bro. Albert was made a fuss of like a long lost son.
Most of the important Offices were filled. Your reporter – who often attend the Lodge and RAM - was again asked to assist in addition to the RST and acted as Tyler for the Mark. As the Tyler I had the pleasure of meeting the Candidate W.Bro. Alfred (Mike) Newley aged 71, a member of Netteswell Cross Lodge No.9280. I reassured Mike that he would enjoy the Ceremony and come out with a smile on his face!
Fortunately after my Tyler’s part I was allowed in to see a marvellous Advancement into the Degree of a M.M.M. The RST brethren blended in perfectly. The actual W.Master resides & works in Germany but with travel & quarantine restrictions on both side of the ditch he was unable to attend. The stand in W.M. today was the Senior Warden, a certain W.Bro. Bill Becker who received P.A.G.St.B. earlier this year. Now W.Bro. Bill is a perfectionist with his ritual which we have seen in the past. Today W.Bro. Bill was by his own admission a little bit ‘rusty’! But he did the whole ceremony from start to finish...everything to the best of ‘rustiness’ which was excellent.
Potters Clay Mark Lodge then worked through the rest of the Agenda to conclude business. They proclaimed W.Bro. Andrew Pugh as W.Master in absentia. The Almoner reported on a number of brethren with health problems some of whom were present. The meeting then concluded in due and ancient form.
On then to the Festive Board for a sumptuous feast with a toast to Bro. Albert Dipre (91) hoping he doesn’t leave it so long before attending again. Also a toast to the smiling Candidate Bro. Mike Newley, who hopes to participate in future proceedings & join the RAM.
So another Potter Clay Mark is over but in November a PGM visit plus Provincial Officers is due. Congratulations to Potters Clay Mark No.1399 for a successful afternoon & evening not forgetting the Ritual Support Team.

Naze Tower No.1380 RAM and MMM
This was always going to be an ambitious undertaking, an Installation meeting in the Royal Ark Mariner and Mark Lodges on the same night with both Lodge’s still building up membership from just four members not to long ago, and not having any meetings for eighteen months, what could possibly go wrong?
The RAM Lodge saw Brother Alan Keyte installed as Commander, W.Bro. Les Morgan from Aurelius Lodge in fine form, with the Address to the Commander carried out by W.Bro. Paul Firmin in a faultless manner.
They also carried out a successful ballot for Maurice Court as a joining member.
Just to add to the tension the Master Elect for the Mark degree, Bro Andy Sylvester had invited the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Provincial Secretary and Provincial D.C. as his guests, how could we hide any mistakes?
With various officers from the Lodge unable to attend, the local Lodges from the north were invited to assist and take on unfilled positions in both ceremonies. The resulting work by the Lodge Officers and invited Officers was a credit to the Mark degree and the two ceremonies were performed to a very high standard with the new Worshipful Commander, Alan Keyte, and Worshipful Master Andy Sylvester, being installed in such a manner that they will remember for a long time.
Any visiting Provincial Officers be warned, it is now the tradition of the Lodge that they will be expected to carry out parts of the work, you have W. Bro. John Finley to thank for this, as he insisted on doing two of the addresses, Master and Brethren in the Mark, both of which in an excellent manner.
Both Lodges have candidates for the year so the numbers are rising and the future is looking brighter after every meeting.
The festive board was a real treat, good food and company and wine supplied to every table by the W. Master Andy Sylvester, it is hoped that this may become the norm for Installation meetings.
Everyone parted company looking forward to the Lodge hosting the Northern Cluster meeting in August.

Boleyn Castle RAM and Mark Lodges No.998
Boleyn Castle Mark and RAM met under dispensation at the Hutton Masonic Centre on Tuesday 3rd August having been unable to meet on their previous date due to the extension of lockdown.
There were a good number of brethren in attendance, including several brethren filling in for absentees, as the meeting got under way with the Royal Ark Mariner Lodge being duly opened at 4.00pm sharp. The dispensation and the minutes were duly dealt with by the secretary W. Bro Chris Hicks and the Director of Ceremonies proclaimed the Worshipful Commander for the ensuing year as W. Bro. Peter Burch, who duly appointed and invested the officers present.
Item 10 on the agenda was to elevate Bro. Mark Waddoups who had been advanced into the Boleyn Castle Mark Lodge No 998 in October of 2019. It was a long wait but well worth it.
The Worshipful Commander invited W. Bro Len Abrahams to explain the signs of the degree which he did in his usual exemplary manner. The candidate was then directed to the Wardens where he was treated to excellent ritual from both. W. Bro Len Abrahams being pressed into work again as SW, duly invested the candidate with his apron and jewel and then presented the working tools of a Royal Ark Mariner in his inimitable style. The last part of the ‘W. Bro. Len Show’ was the explanation of the steps which he gave in in a wonderful manner. He was then allowed to return to his seat in the lodge for a rest.
The NEW Royal Ark Mariner then took his seat in the lodge, the Worshipful Commander thanked those brethren who had assisted during the degree, and in particular, W. Bro. Abrahams and the lodge was then closed in due form.
After a short break for refreshments the brethren assembled again to open the Boleyn Castle Mark Lodge No 998 at 5.30pm. The dispensation was read by the Secretary to allow the meeting to take place and the Worshipful Master, W. Bro Bryan McDonald, then opened the lodge in due form.
The Worshipful Master then proceeded to install his successor, W. Bro Steve Dwyer, ably assisted by the officers of the lodge and several visitors.
The new Worshipful Master, W. Bro. Steve Dwyer was placed in the Chair of Adoniram, and the address to the Master was delivered by W. Bro. Roy Kaye in excellent fashion.
The Worshipful Master appointed and installed his officers and W. Bro. Chris Hicks the gave both the address to the Wardens and the Address to the Overseers in an excellent manner. At the conclusion of the investiture W. Bro. Roy Kaye then gave the address the brethren.
The remaining lodge business was concluded, and the lodge was then closed in due form.
The brethren got together for some photographs with their newly elevated brother and the newly installed Worshipful Master.
All in all a very successful meeting was enjoyed by all and afterwards 18 sat down to dine at the Festive Board, all looking forward to their next meeting.

Brentwood Mark and RAM Lodge No.377
Monday 2nd August - after a nearly 18 month long gap other than the occasional Virtual Business meeting, all due to the Covid Pandemic, members of the Brentwood Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 377 and the Brentwood Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 377 met at Mount Avenue Banqueting Suite in Shenfield.
Although the Provincial suspension has ended both meetings required a Dispensation from Province, due to a date change, to enable physical meetings, which all members were most eager to resume.
During the Brentwood RAM Lodge meeting, W.Bro. Jack Saunders was proclaimed as the Worshipful Commander and he then appointed and invested his Officers.
The acting Scribe, W.Bro. Chris Race, reported that there was an eager candidate waiting in the wings to join the Lodge and that this would hopefully take place at the next meeting.
Members then elected Worshipful Brother Nigel Owen as Worship Commander for the ensuing year. He will be installed by W.Bro. Jack in November (fingers crossed).
W. Bro. David Harvey then present Bro. J.P. Singh with his Grand Lodge Certificate having been admitted to the Lodge in February 2020.
After the Brentwood RAM Lodge was closed in due form, with a short break to reconfigure the temple, the Brentwood Mark Lodge meeting commenced with, W.Bro. Mike Jervis proclaimed as the Worshipful Master and he then appointed and invested his Officers.
The acting Secretary, W.Bro. Chris Race reported that there were no less than 3 candidates waiting in the wings to join the Lodge. These brethren would be advanced as soon as was possible and possibly during double ceremonies - but always ensuring that the candidates had the best experience that the lodge has traditionally offered. The Lodge then worked its way through the rest of the summons in its usual fashion and was closed in due and ancient form.
After the meetings had concluded, 18 Brethren dined in good humour at the Festive Board including W.Bro. Paul Busby Provincial Grand Secretary, W.Bro Roy Kaye Provincial Grand Almoner and the man with 1000 shirts, W.Bro Len Abrahams.

Chelmer Mark and RAM Lodge No.342
On the 28th July 2021 Chelmer Mark and RAM Lodges held their first “Real” meeting since Wednesday 8th January 2020, and it was enjoyed by nearly 20 Brethren at Chelmsford Masonic Centre.
The Chelmer RAM Lodge No. 342 Installation meeting started the evening off, in what was a slightly bizarre set of circumstances arising from the enforced suspensions due to Covid. Worshipful Commander Ian Taylor was proclaimed as the Worshipful Commander of Chelmer RAM for the current /past year then the lodge formally balloted for, and elected at the same meeting, their next Commander! As such, Bro. Christopher Brown being the only nomination, the Worshipful Commander declared Bro. Brown duly elected.
Then the installation of Bro. Brown was conducted in full by the Worshipful Commander Ian Taylor, in a most heartfelt manner, with the Address to the Commander being delivered excellently by W.Bro. Robert Harman ProvRAMGR/PProvSGD. Worshipful Commander Chris Brown than had great pleasure in appointing and investing his officers, before completing the evenings agenda and closing the Chelmer Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 342.
Next was the turn of the Chelmer Mark Lodge No. 342. Before the meeting commenced the lodge stood to take a moment to remember W.Bro. Andrew Barr MBE PProvGJO who passed the Grand Lodge above on Sunday 9th May 2021. Once the meeting commenced, it again started with W.Bro. David Rootkin ProvGStwd being formally proclaimed as Worshipful Master for the current year before appointing and investing his officers.
Before moving onto the main business of the evening, the W.M and Brethren then welcomed Bro. Clifford Jones as a joining member, formally of St Clement Lodge (No 688) of the Grand Lodge of Scotland.
After welcoming Bro. Jones, the Lodge had great joy in Advancing Bro. Christopher Gunn, a member of Lodge of Good Fellowship (No 276), which was conducted in a most excellent and near-perfect manner by the Worshipful Master, W.Bro. Rootkin, ably assisted by W.Bro. Ian Gager PAGDC and all the officers of Chelmer Lodge; a credit to the lodge’s Director of Ceremonies, W.Bro. Mike Saffill PProvGStwd, and Secretary, W.Bro. Brian Collings PProvGJW, in ensuring regular Lodge of Instructions were maintained, albeit over Zoom, during the past 18 months.
The lodge business was then concluded, but before the lodge was closed, the members of Chelmer Lodge had great pleasure in congratulating W.Bro. David Rootkin being appointed by the Provincial Grand Master an active Provincial Grand Steward; plus, W.Bro. Donald McKillop being promoted to Past Provincial Grand Master Overseer and W.Bro. David Chambers being promoted to Past Provincial Grand Senior Deacon.
The Lodge was then closed and 15 sat down to enjoy, for the first time in a long time, the festive board.

St Nicholas RAM Lodge No.413
On 26th July the installation meeting was held of the St Nicholas RAM Lodge No.413 at the Brightlingsea Temple because the Harwich Temple was being refurbished and as half the membership is from the Brightlingsea area this was a good compromise.
The Meeting was opened at 6.30pm by the W.Commander, W.Bro Richard Stephens, and there were present a total of 25 Mariners with 10 being guests. The W. Cdr noted that a few precautions were still in place to try and reduce any risk of Covid incidents, therefore there would be no singing of opening and closing odes and brethren wore masks.
The Scribe was called upon to read the dispensation permitting the variation of venue and date from that in the by-laws and the business of the Lodge then proceeded according to the published summons.
The W. Commander formally announced the passing of W. Bro. Raymond Talbot and recounted his own personal recollections of him. The Brethren then stood in silent tribute to a dearly departed Brother and gentleman.
Although the minutes of the last virtual Business meeting had been distributed, and no objections to them had been received, the Scribe read then for the benefit of the visitors. They were then put to the meeting and confirmed.
A ballot was then held for a re-joining member, Bro. Colin Roderick Kendrick. This proved in favour and Bro. Kendrick would formally join at the November meeting.
W. Bro. Richard Stephens was then Proclaimed Worshipful Commander until the next regular period of election by W. Bro. Paul Firmin, and he was saluted by the brethren with three. The W. Commander then appointed and invested his officers.
The Treasurer reported that all subscriptions had been paid. However, despite the rising subscriptions, he still expected a deficit for the current year.
In the absence of the Almoner, the Scribe read W. Bro. Relf’s written report which said that he wished all the brethren good health and, in addition to the “pill popping”, to ensure they keep up with the jabs, and if any nightclubbing was planned to “keep masked up!”.
The Charity Steward thanked the brethren for all their past support and said that there would be a raffle at that evening’s festive board.
W. Bro. David Rout then gave a most interesting talk concerning the restoration work at Harwich Masonic Centre and recounting details of the plaque presented by W. Bro. Frank G. Littlewood.
There being no further business, the Lodge was closed at 19.55 according to ancient custom, and afterwards 25 Brethren then dined in good fellowship under the presidency of the Worshipful Commander.

Aurelius Mark Lodge No. 814 and the Sailship Charity
On Friday the 4th of June 2021, the Worshipful Master of Aurelius Mark Lodge No. 814, W. Bro. Ken Headworth, who has recently achieved 50 years in the Mark Degree, attended ‘the Sailship Training and Learning for Life’ charity, accompanied by Elizabeth Barritt, their CEO for the presentation of a Table Saw purchased for the charity by the Essex Mark Benevolent Fund.
One of the members of the Aurelius Mark Lodge is a volunteer at the charity and there was a clear need for an efficient Table Saw, thereby enabling the trainees to construct wooden products such as planters and bird boxes. The new equipment would not only give those in need access to additional skills but also assist in raising funds for the charity.
The volunteer contacted the Aurelius Lodge Almoner in the form of W. Bro L. Thurston who then proposed the idea to the Essex Mark Benevolent Fund who subsequently granted the money in order to purchase the equipment.
Pictured is W. Bro Ken Headworth presenting the newly purchased Table Saw to Elizabeth Barritt with a virtual handshake.
Elizabeth said “We are very grateful to the Mark Masons of Essex and the Benevolent Fund for the invaluable presentation of this equipment”.
The objectives of the Sailship Training and Learning for Life charity are to ‘champion work and life skills training for people of all ages, living with a learning disability. We offer support for improved mental health and well-being to people who may be recovering from injury or illness, through therapeutic programmes, counselling and the offer of pathways back into employment’.

Fillebrook Mark Lodge No.944 Cheese Tasting
On Friday 26th March, twenty members of the Fillebrook Mark Lodge got together with partners and guests to be entertained to a Zoom meeting with a difference - an informative Cheese Tasting.
Organised by Worshipful Master, Michael Levene, the Courtyard Dairy from North Yorkshire introduced six different English cheeses, which had been couriered to the participating members a couple of days before, along with biscuits and Quince jelly.
As each cheese was tried, cheese expert and host Richard gave an explanation of the background, mode of preparation and provenance of each cheese. As the members tasted the cheeses, comments and questions were put to Richard and discussion followed between the participants.
Members supplied their own accompanying drinks as appropriate and a most enjoyable and fun time was had by all. Above all an unusual and very entertaining evening with good company. To be recommended.
Members are now looking for an organiser of Chocolate Gateau Tasting Zoom meetings
