Mark Benevolent Fund
Presentation of Minibus to
Sailship Training and Learning Charity
On Tuesday 27 February the head of Charities for the Mark Benevolent Fund, W. Bro. Darren Coleman-Heald made a visit to Clacton on Sea, accompanied by members of Aurelius Mark Lodge No. 814, along with the Assistant Provincial Grand Master W. Bro. John Stannard and the Provincial Grand Almoner W. Bro. Roy Kaye for the presentation of the ‘Sailship's’ new minibus which had been funded by a generous donation of £20,000 by the M.B.F.
‘Sailship's’ C.E.O. Liz Barrett informed everyone present that the minibus would allow the charity to expand and to help more people attend their facilities.
After the presentation everyone retired to the bar for a most enjoyable buffet lunch.
The only downside to the event was that W. Bro. Darren didn't get a chance to visit Clacton seafront before his return train journey back to Mark Masons Hall.
This generous donation by the M.B.F shows once again that the money we raise is used to support local charities within Essex.

A presentation was made to the “Sailship Training and Learning for Life charity”, on Friday 12 December 2024 by the Provincial Almoner W.Bro. Roy Kaye, accompanied by Bro. Alan Penney, the Charity Steward, and W.Bro. Ken Headworth, both of Aurelius Lodge No 814, based in Clacton on Sea.
The photograph shows them accompanied by F. Elizabeth Barritt MA/QCG/BA (hons) CEO/Trustee - Sailship Training and Learning for Life and several of the trainees who attend the centre. |
‘Sailships’ CEO Elizabeth Barritt, said this very generous donation from the MBF will allow us to obtain a vehicle, that would not be of the traditional ‘minibus’ type.
Those vehicles require a considerable amount of monitoring/monthly servicing etc and usually include facilities for wheelchairs, clamped in place, and as those of our community who utilise wheelchairs are catered for by community transport, via their social care packages, we do not require such a vehicle.
However, for those people in the Tendring District community who are vulnerable – either by learning disability, age, or deprivation, who do not meet social care criteria, transport provided by our charity would be the only way they could access our services, therefore a vehicle is a hugely valuable asset.

There is currently a waiting list of people who cannot access Sailship, who would like to join our ASDAN Employability Courses, which offer supported training and learning towards employment / volunteering.
We are also creating a dementia friendly garden, intended for the elderly in our community, who will benefit from a safe and supported environment for themselves and their family/carers to enjoy a sensory setting, where a unique experience can be had by all.
A vehicle to transport them will be a huge support to this particular project.
