Rob's Training
And so the journey begins. 8am on a dry (thankfully) and reasonably mild Monday morning, I donned my running gear and stepped out for my first run as part of the 20 weeks of training now being planned to get me “race ready” for the London Marathon which will take place on Sunday 27th April, 2025
My running journey, which has brought me to this point, really began during COVID lockdowns in 2020, with the ability to leave the house for daily exercise. I took to the roads of Wickford and surrounding areas and started to clock up some serious miles. I joined a running club, the Billericay Striders, which helped me considerably with social runs, once we were allowed to run together in groups again as the social distancing rules relaxed.
I ran a marathon in October 2021 in Chester, and must confess this was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done. At the finish I vowed never to do it again, unless I managed to get into London!
Fast forward to October this year, and with my 8th annual attempt to get a place in the race submitted, I was very surprised to receive a positive response. So, fast forward to today, and with 20 weeks and 6 days to go until the event, my first run to test my current levels of fitness and endurance was needed. As this was to be a solo effort, decided to take some music along, hence the headphones in the picture (am awaiting delivery of some ear pods, so can lose the trailing wires).
Ninety minutes and ten miles later, all seems to be pretty good. Post run, muscle gun and foam roller at the ready, to ensure the tightness in the legs is only a temporary inconvenience. Sports masseur and sports physiotherapist are both now on speed dial, and I fear I may need their collective help to keep me in one piece.
As so many do in the London Marathon, have decided to try and raise some charitable funds. In my role as Provincial Grand Secretary, I have seen many news items and presentations on the excellent work of the Mark Benevolent Fund, and so felt this was a very good recipient for any funds that I may be able to raise, through the generosity of those who know me.
